Electricity and 30 Amps

Hit my first 'and this all won't run at the same time' issue today.  My brand new shiny AC keep tripping the breakers.  I was warned this would happen and to get some timers for things like the dehumidifier and hot water heater, but it hadn't been an issue yet.

Going to order timers today.

In the meantime I'm going to unplug the hot water heater and see if that makes a difference.  I also need to fill up the fridge so it uses less power.  The mistake I made was to have the washing machine/dryer running at the same time, so I'll make sure that doesn't happen.

Life goal is definitely solar with some kind of battery system so I can run the AC and all of the rest of the things without issues.

Moving in - Week 1

I guess it's obvious by my lack of posts that I've been busy!  Moving is such a pita and I hate it, and I'm still not finished.  This weekend I'm going to finish packing at the old apartment and then have the rest of the stuff moved over.  Everything else will be taken to good will or the dump.

I'll write more about each individual challenge later.  One of the points of this blog is to get information out about the challenges of living on a houseboat and what I did, something I couldn't find when trying to decide if I really wanted to take this step.  In a nutshell I have struggled with downsizing, the propane alarm keeps going off even when the propane isn't hooked up, because my lack of screens I've had to keep the windows closed and it's getting hot in here (I'm concerned I may have killed my red wine) and the logistics of getting stuff to and trash/recycling out of the marina.  Oh and I didn't have hot water for the first few days and I couldn't figure out why.

But not all has been a struggle!  I have a screen person coming in just under two weeks, I do have hot water (I had managed to unplug the hot water heater just enough that it disconnected but not enough for the plug to actually look unplugged), I have a portable AC unit, I am making really good progress on unpacking and I have new dishes!  Internet is hooked up without a visit from a technician, I have an idea on why the propane alarm keeps going off (the battery in the hull may be dying) though I'm not sure how to check it, but at least I know I'm not going to die.

My goal this weekend is to finish packing up the apartment and unpacking on the houseboat so I have room for all of the boxes from the apartment.  We'll see how I do!

Unpacking and sorting and 353 ft is a lot smaller than I thought

For the record, I did a lot of downsizing before trying this move.  Not everything has been packed up in the old apartment still, but I'm trying to make room here.  I'm trying to get clothes in my tiny closet and I'm having trouble.  I need more storage space!

I do have internet though!  It was pre-wired which is awesome, and now I can set Alexa back up.  I've missed my morning news rundown.  I keep going to ask Alexa to remember something, or what time it is, or something else.  I believe I am addicted.

This also means I can install my August locks!  I like them because I can still use a metal key, and I will have a keypad for visitors.  Project this weekend!

Tonight I'm trying to empty boxes and sort things that need to be recycled and taken to good will because I have no room.  I'm still packing my kitchen up in the old apartment, I'll work on that more tomorrow.  Few logistical things left, and I think I'll have to downsize even more, but I'm making progress!

Day 2, unpacking and more unpacking

First night in the boat, slept really well.  Don't know if that is because of the rocking, the new mattress or both, but I felt good this morning.  Did miss the pup (he boarded the night before).

A few friends came over and were TON of help packing  I am starting to feel the restrictions of the size, but I think I can work around it.  I see a trip to the Container Store today for some organizational help.  And a shower curtain liner.  Why is it so hard to buy a shower curtain liner that doesn't suck?

We drank a bottle of wine, had some pizza, and I can use the couch!  Now to get the rest of the stuff here packed away and pack up the rest of the apartment.

It's been quite a year! or F*** 2020

I realized the other day that it had been a while since I updated.  I am going to blame 2020 and Covid.   Brief summary of this past year: ...
